How to describe JournalOn
These lines are accurate, pre-approved and designed to work inside a paragraph. Use them as a starting point — you are welcome to paraphrase.
- What it is
- JournalOn is a private, local-first journaling application available as a web journal and Chrome extension. It stores all writing on the user's own device — no account, no server, no cloud.
- What it is not
- JournalOn is not a social journaling platform, a productivity tool or a notes application. It is a private reflection space built around the therapeutic and creative benefits of handwritten-style journaling.
- Founded
- Independently developed and maintained. Not venture-backed.
- Availability
- Free web journal at journalon.ie/try. Free Chrome extension. Physical personalised journals available in the shop. Pro tier with cloud sync coming soon.
- Privacy
- All writing is stored locally in the browser's localStorage. Encrypted export (AES-256-GCM) is available. No telemetry, no analytics on journal content.
- Contact
- hello@journalon.ie — interview requests, review copies and editorial enquiries.

The offline-first manifesto
Why we built it this way
Four principles that shape every decision in the product — from the data architecture to the design of the writing canvas.
Software should make space, not claim it.
The default assumption of modern software is that it is entitled to your attention, your data and your behaviour. JournalOn starts from the opposite assumption: that the software exists to serve the writing, and the writing belongs entirely to you.
Offline-first is not a technical choice. It is an ethical one.
When your journal never touches a server, a different relationship becomes possible between the writer and the page. The writing is not a product. It is not a training set. It is not a signal to be read by a recommendation algorithm. It is simply yours.
The absence of an account is a feature.
Every account is a relationship with obligations on both sides. JournalOn's core is account-free because the relationship between a person and their private writing should not require a contract with a third party.
Private writing is not the same as secret writing.
Privacy in a journal is not about hiding. It is about having the conditions under which honest thinking becomes possible. You write differently when you know no one is reading — and that difference is where the actual therapeutic benefit lives.
The full manifesto is available as a formatted PDF on request — email hello@journalon.ie.
